What is Talent Capital?

Talent Capital Series #1

“Our people are our greatest asset.”

We often hear it in growing organisations, people bring enormous value: expertise, experience, judgement, creativity and relationships. But having talented people does not automatically mean an organisation has built a strong capability. When knowledge sits with a few individuals, decisions depend on particular people. Sometimes, ways of working are not made clear, and much of that value remains individual rather than organisational.

So what are we actually building?

As organisations grow, the challenge is not simply to accumulate more talent, it is to create the conditions that allow people to contribute effectively together: knowledge needs to be shared, responsibilities need to become clearer, decisions need to happen without everything travelling through the same people, systems need to support the work, and culture needs to reinforce the behaviours the organisation needs to succeed.

This is where I use the term Talent Capital: the collective capability an organisation builds through its people, systems and culture to create value and sustain growth.

Here’s the shift: Talent is what people bring into an organisation. Talent Capital is what the organisation builds from it.

That distinction matters because people will join, develop, change roles and eventually leave. A growing organisation cannot afford for its capability to continually arrive and depart with individuals, it needs to turn individual knowledge, experience and contribution into something that can be shared, strengthened and multiplied across the organisation.

Leaders often ask “Do we have the right people?”, but the real question is “What are they building around and through their people, to make the organisation more capable?”

Because sustainable growth isn't simply about acquiring talent, it's about building Talent Capital.
